NFL 2020 Washington cut the quarterback they elected in 2019 less than two years later
QPerhaps it is a bit early to write the epitaph of the career of Dwayne Haskins in the NFL, but he’s walking the same path as the biggest failures at quarterback in NFL history.
Washington decided on Monday to cut the marshal, who did not even complete his second season in the capital’s team. Not a positive distinction because since the union of the AFL and the NFL in 1970, only 7 of the 114 quarterbacks chosen in the first round did not return for a third season on the team. And go list.
- Todd Marinovich. LA Raiders (1991-1992)
- Jim Druckermiller, San Francisco 49ers (1997-1998)
- Cade McNown, Chicago Bears (1999-2000)
- Johnny Manziel, Cleveland Browns (2014-2015)
- Paxton Lynch, Denver Broncos (2016, 2017)
- Josh Rosen, Arizona Cardinals (2018)
- Dwayne Haskins Washington (2019-2020)
Todd Marinovich was the first on the list. Chosen with the 21st pick of the first round, in a draft that had quarterbacks of little relevance, except for a certain Brett Favre chosen 12 picks later. His father was the Raiders’ first strength and conditioning coach and since he was a child he was’ trained ‘to be a quarterback, taking care of his diet and physique, but that It led to my consuming alcohol and marijuana since high school, that got him into trouble in the NCAA (he was arrested for possession of cocaine) and amphetamines in the NFL, using urine from friends to pass doping tests. In his rookie year he was forced to play in the season finale and in the playoffs, but the Week 10 of 1992 was the last time he played in the NFL. He was cut prior to the 1993 season after failing his third doping test.
Druckmiller was chosen by the Niners in 1997, position 26, thinking that it would be the successor of Steve Young. He started just one game in his rookie year and prior to 1999, the 49ers traded him to Miami.
In 1999, the Bears tried to fix their perennial quarterback problem with the UCLA southpaw, Cade McNown. He finished with a mark of 3-12 as a starter after being chosen with the 12th selection of the Draft, in which they selected Tim Couch, Donovan McNabb, Akili Smith and Daunte Culpepper. He was moved to Miami prior to 2001. In 2002 he moved to San Francisco.
The first Heisman winner as a second-year rookie, Johnny Manziel, was chosen by the Browns with pick 22 of 2014. Brian Hoyer was the starter, but his poor performances led Manziel to come on as a substitute in Week 14, after which he started two games before getting injured. He started a couple more games in 2015 due to injuries to Josh McCown. He was going to start, but a video emerged showing him partying in Texas during his bye week, costing him the job, but Austin Davis’ poor performance after another McCown injury brought him back to the title. He had a couple more appearances before being dropped from week 17 for an alleged concussion, but was reportedly in Vegas partying. It was cut in March 2016.
Lynch had the same task as Druckenmiller, of trying to replace a legend; in his case, Peyton Manning. But he could not win the title, being a backup for Trevor Siemian, He started just four games in two years with the Broncos, who cut him before the 2018 season. He spent time in Seattle and Pittsburgh, but did not play again.
Rosen had the strangest story of all. They were selected by Arizona in 2018, but they were the worst team in the league, costing Vance Joseph his job. Kliff Kingsbury arrived and chose to choose Kyler Murray, so Rosen was traded to Miami after just a year in the desert. There he found another team that looked to be one of the worst in the league, but Ryan Fitzpatrick took the title and they won 5 of their last 9 games. The Dolphins selected Tua Tagovailoa, so he was cut and signed with the Arizona practice team, before being signed by the 49ers last week.
Pro Football Reference has the metric Approximate Value which ponders the careers of the various players, and again Haskins is on a list of quarterbacks who failed in the league even though they had more opportunities than just two years, such as Ryan Leaf, Brady Quinn, Akili Smith y JaMarcus Russell.
