2021 NFL Draft They take the quarterback of the Cougars with the second draft pick
Chen one talks about For teams with ‘eternal’ quarterback problems in the NFL, the names of the Browns and Bears are among the first to come to mind, but the New York Jets have arguments to raise their hands. Joe Namath’s fame covers the Jets’ malaria at the position. Yes, Broadway Joe won a Super Bowl and is the franchise’s all-time leader in yards and TD passes, but Namath was a negative starter for Gang Green (60-61-4), with more interceptions (215) than touchdowns ( 170) in his career.
The last few years have been very difficult for the team in the most important position. Mark Sanchez is the best and by far from a list that includes Tim Tebow, Greg McElroy, Michael Vick, Geno Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Bryce Petty, Josh McCown, Trevor Siemian, Sam Darnold, Luke Falk, and Joe Flacco. In the Draft they have not had luck either– The history of their chosen quarterbacks in the first three rounds is Sam Darnold (Round 1, Pick 3 in 2018), Christian Hackenberg (Round 2, Pick 51 in 2016), Geno Smith (Round 2 Pick 39 in 2013), Mark Sanchez (Round 1, Pick 5 in 2009), Kellen Clemens (Round 2 Pick 49), Chad Pennington (Round 1 Pick 18), Browning Nagle (Round 2 Pick 34 in 1991), Ken O’Brien (Round 1 Pick 24 in 1983 ) and Richard Todd (Round 1 Pick 6 in 1976). Of them, the most successful was Sanchez, with four playoff victories.
In 2021 they opted again to seek franchise quarterback in collegiate draft. With the second overall selection they chose BYU’s Zach Wilson, who became a sensation in 2020 in the NCAA.
Wilson, unlike Trevor Lawrence, was not one of those quarterbacks seen for the NFL since they were in high school.. Otherwise. He grew up outside of Salt Lake City and was a 2018 three-star prospect, 38th generation pro-style quarterback. Few colleges recruited him before his senior year of high school. Wilson wanted to play for the Utah Utes, but his state team did not offer him a scholarship, and after winning the championship, Boise State, Minnesota and Iowa sought him out, but in the end he opted for the BYU Cougars, a school with a certain historical fame for being the Alma mater by Steve Young and Jim McMahon.
He started three years at BYU. In his freshman year he became the youngest quarterback in the show’s history, but really it wasn’t on the NFL’s radar before 2020. Similar to Joe Burrow the previous year, Wilson exploded, with 73.5% of passes completed (program record), 33 touchdowns and just three interceptions, leading the Cougars who won their first nine games, before losing 22-17 to Coastal Carolina, when they led an 81-yard drive in less than a minute to win, but they tackled Dax Milne at the 1-yard line on the last play.
BYU finished 11-1 and ranked 11th at the end of the season.
Wilson chose not to return for his senior year after exploding in 2020, showing great skill on broken plays, with arm power that compares to Patrick Mahomes. That made him attractive to the Jets, who they changed sam darnold after three seasons in the team.
There were some doubts about his height (6 feet, 2 inches, or 1.90 meters), but mostly about his shoulder from his pitching shoulder, operated on in January 2019, but he cleared them up when teams saw him pitch.

That’s when the Jets decided to pass on Justin Fields, who was the second-best QB after Trevor Lawrence since high school, and went with Wilson.
