December 23, 2021

The ICG fell in December to the lowest levels of Alberto Fernández’s management

Confidence in the government of Alberto Fernández fell again in the last month of 2021 and is at the lowest level since the administration began, in December 2019. According to a measurement carried out by the Universidad Torcuato Di Tella, the ICG reached 1.42 in December, on a scale that goes from 0 to 5. It represents a negative variation of 2.1% compared to the month of November.

In year-on-year terms, the index suffered a decrease of 23 per story. Also, the current confidence level It is 28% lower than the last measurement of the government of Mauricio Macri, corresponding to December 2019.

The defeat in the legislative elections deepened the fall in confidence in the Government
The defeat in the legislative elections deepened the fall in confidence in the Government

The number confirms a trend that started several months ago. The hope that the Frente de Todos government had generated in 2019 and that had led it to win the elections was deflating, especially due to the mistakes made during the management of the coronavirus pandemic. The scandals that most impacted on social humor were the VIP vaccination and the clandestine birthday party of the first lady, Fabiola Yáñez. That was reflected in the defeat of the ruling party at the polls, during the mid-term legislative elections. If the index of December 2021 is compared with January 2020, the first full month of Alberto Fernández’s administration, the fall was 39 percent.

The fall of the ICG in December shows the index’s stagnation, after the defeat of the Frente de Todos in the November elections, at the lowest values recorded during the current government’s administration.

According to the report, the variation of the ICG compared to November was negative in 3 of its 5 components: Honesty of officials (1.85 points, -6.1%); General evaluation of the government (1.18 points, -0.2%); Efficiency in the administration of public spending (1.08 points, -6.8%). On the contrary, there were positive variations in Capacity to solve the country’s problems (1.57 points, 0.8%) and Concern for the general interest (1.44 points, 2.5%).

In addition, the work shows that the confidence index for December once again reached its maximum level in the 30-49-year-old segment (1.49 points, with a negative variation of 8%). Unlike the previous months, the second group with the highest confidence in the government was those between 18 and 29 years old (1.42 points, with an increase of 7%). While the group with the least confidence continues to be those over 50 years of age (1.35 points).

When analyzing the geographical areas, as in the previous month, Greater Buenos Aires presented the highest ICG value (1.58 points, with a decrease of 4% compared to November), followed by the interior (1.37 points, with a negative variation of 2%) and, finally, the Federal Capital (1.27 points, with a 4% increase).

Among those interviewed who say they have not been (they or their families) a victim of crime in the last 12 months, the GCI was 1.64 points, with a negative variation of 4% compared to November, and among those who say they have been a victim of 0.83 points, with a positive variation of 6 percent.

Finally, in December, the GCI was higher among those who believe that the economic situation will improve within a year (3.83 points, with a positive variation of 8% compared to November), than among those who believe that it will remain the same (1, 89 points, with an increase of 3%) or that it will get worse (0.46 points, with a decrease of 8%).

“This correlation is likely to be clearly bidirectional: optimism (pessimism) about the economic future reinforces (weakens) confidence in the government, but at the same time greater (less) confidence in the government generates greater (less) optimism”, concludes the report.

The rise and fall of the image of the government administration in the first two years were analyzed by the Infobae Data Unit, which crossed statistics from the Di Tella University index with the main events of the mandate and the progress of the pandemic. The hope of a new government, the announcement of the first quarantine as a preventive measure in the face of uncertainty, the incipient channels of dialogue opened with the leaders of the opposition to face the pandemic gave it its best positive image in these two years. Even among those who had not voted for him.

But that perception was worn away during the long confinement and a series of mishaps with marches and countermarches in the management, which had as its main exponents two of the scandals that had the most impact on social humor: the VIP vaccination in February of this year, and the clandestine birthday party of the first lady, Fabiola Yáñez, in Olivos when the restrictions were in full force, in July 2020.
