January 26, 2022

The United Arab Emirates on Wednesday delivered one million doses of Russia’s Sputnik coronavirus vaccine to the Gaza Strip, which is facing a surge in infections of the omicron variant.

The batch, the largest sent to the Palestinian territory since the start of the pandemic, was delivered through the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza.

It was then stored in the warehouses of the Ministry of Health of Hamas, the Islamist movement that governs the Palestinian territory.

The enclave, subjected to an Israeli blockade for 15 years, is facing the spread of the omicron variant and the increase in the number of infected, said Majdi Dahir, director of preventive medicine at the Ministry of Health.

The doses that arrived on Wednesday will mainly go to schoolchildren over the age of 12, Health Ministry chief Mahmoud Hammad told a news conference in Rafah.

The health authorities of the territory of 2.3 million inhabitants have officially counted 197,000 infected people since the start of the pandemic, of whom some 1,750 have died.
