Colima experienced the morning of this Tuesday, January 25, a prison riot that left at least seven injured and nine dead due to an alleged brawl between criminal gangs in dormitories A and B of the city’s Social Reintegration Center.

Jose Abel Saucedo Romero, former director of Prevention and Social Rehabilitation of the Cereso de Colima between 2016 and 2018, had already warned about the potential danger that existed inside the prison due to the lack of trained personnel, the non-existent criminological classification of inmates and the total indifference of authorities and governors.

The situation in the Colima prison system is disastrous”, affirmed the specialist in criminology to Infobae Mexico.

The specialist emphasized that for three years he had already pointed out the importance of separating inmates in their bedrooms according to the level of danger. “As long as they have the inmates mixed up, as long as there is no proper classification and enough trained prison staff, things like today and worse will happen“, he pointed.

“They do not have an adequate criminological classification of inmates because there are not enough specialized personnel, such as doctors, psychologists, social workers, criminologists, etc. As long as they don’t have specialized dormitories for each type of danger, they’re going to have them mixed up and these kinds of problems are going to arise,” insisted Saucedo Romero.

For the former director of the penitentiary center, the penitentiary authorities did not heed his warnings in 2018 “by corrupt”.

They began to do pure crap in the prison system. In the previous administration it got worse because they were afraid of certain inmates. In the current one they have been four months and they should have done something”, he warned and added that he and a couple of colleagues even offered the current state government free advice for the changes required by the Colima prison, “so that they could do things as technically it should be”.

However, he regretted So far they have received no response.

“The governor who was there at that time (José Ignacio Peralta, from the PRI) was aware of it and was not interested in the project, rather they were afraid of the inmates of a certain power, and decided not to do anything”, he pointed. “As long as there are not enough personnel and the prison does not have enough architecture, they will not be able to do anything; on the contrary, will be in the hands of the inmates

The reason why this sector is practically abandoned, according to the former official, is because it is not taken due importance, “If they have resources for these works, they channel them into others, because unfortunately we only remember the prison system when there are escapes, deaths and riots”.

“Several of us who are already pensioned, retired or away from the prison system, and who do not want ‘bone’, are willing to collaborate with the current government and tell it what technically it should do, including how they can get help without spending a lot of money”, a proposal that he assures has already been sent to them in writing.

Indira Vizcaíno, current governor of Colima, confirmed in a series of tweets that the facts “they started after 9 am and at 10:00 the state authority had total control of the situation in this penitentiary […] From the first moment, the Ministry of Public Security (SSP) and I have personally attended to this situation. I have requested the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) to carry out the pertinent investigations for the demarcation of responsibilities.

After the confrontation, the security authorities reviewed the bedrooms where they found seven people dead and eight more wounded who were taken to various hospitals. One of the injured died at the hospital., added a statement from the Social Communication Coordination of the State Government. The authorities also found a firearm and other sharp weapons.

The state government regrets what happened and the loss of life and expresses its solidarity with the families of the victims; and continues with a punctual monitoring of the health situation of the injured people”.

In accordance with The Day, it was the fifth riot in the last two years. Reports from the Ministry of Public Security (SSP) consulted by the newspaper detailed that In May 2020, three dead inmates, five injured and one escape attempt were recorded.
