NFL 2022 The team announced its new nickname on Wednesday.
Ehe Washington NFL team leaves its racist name behind even further and, after two years with the generic name of Football Team, a new era will begin in 2022 under the name of the Commanders. A nickname change not seen in the NFL since the Oilers became the Titans in 1999, two years after leaving Houston for Tennessee.
They are not the only changes, since most NFL teams have undergone some modification, either due to a change of city or nickname. Those that are not most of the franchises from the old AFL (Dolphins, Bills, Bengals, Broncos) or recently created (Panthers, Jaguars, Texans, Buccaneers, Seahawks, Falcons, Saints and Browns), although the Seattle franchise changed conference a couple of times.
Jets: They debuted in the AFL in 1960 as the Titans. In 1964 they changed to their current name.
Patriots: The nickname has been the same since they debuted in the AFL in 1960, but in 1971 they moved from Boston to the suburbs, leaving the name of the city and adopting the name of the region, New England.
Steelers: From 1933 to 1939 they were known as the Pirates, sharing the name of the baseball team.
Ravens: The Baltimore team has a particular situation. Technically it was the franchise of the Cleveland Browns, but moved to Maryland in 1996, adopting this name which has not changed, but lhistory and records did not travel with them and the new Cleveland team, born in 1999, reverted to the Browns name and all previous records.
Browns: the other part of Ravens history. They were born with the same name and nickname that they currently have, but they did not play in the NFL from 1996 to 1998.
Titans: Another AFL franchise, but they moved and changed their nickname. They were Houston Oilers until 1996, after which they moved to Nashville. It was two years Tennessee Oilers and in 1999 they became the Titans.
Colts: Like the Pats, they have kept the name, but moved from Baltimore to Indianapolis prior to the 1984 season.
Chiefs: Another AFL team that changed everything. From 1960 to 1962 they were the Dallas Texans, after which they moved and became the Kansas City Chiefs.
Chargers: The first season of the AFL was played in Los Angeles, moving in 1961 to San Diego, where they remained until 2016, moving back to their hometown.
Raiders: the most nomadic team. The nickname continues from its birth in 1960, but they have bounced all over the West Coast: Oakland (1960 to 1981), Los Angeles (1982 to 1994), Oakland again (1995 to 2019) and Las Vegas (2020 to present). .
Commanders: multiple changes. Were the Boston Braves (1932), Boston Redskins (1933 a 1936), Washington Redskins (1937 a 2019), Washington Football Team (2020 to 2021) and from 2022 they will be the Commanders.
Eagles: They have kept the name, although in 1943, due to World War II, they merged the teams with the Steelers to be the Phil-Pitt Combine, known unofficially as the Steagles.
Seahawks: they have always been in Seattle with this name since its foundation, although they have the peculiarity of going from NFC West in its first season in 1976 to the AFC West in 1977, but returned to the National in 2002 after the birth of the Texans.
Cardinals: the team was born in Chicago in 1920. Due to the Second World War, merged with the Steelers in 1944 for one season. In 1960 they moved to San Luis, in 1988 to Phoenix, changing from city to state in 1994, to be known as the Arizona Cardinals since then.
Rams: other nomads. were born in Cleveland (1937 to 1945), they went to The Angels (1946 to 1994), they reached saint Louis (1995 to 2015) and returned to The Angels in 2016.
Lions: were born in 1930 as the Portsmouth Spartans. In 1934 they adopted their current Detroit Lions identity.
Bears: were born in 1920 as the Decatur Staleys. In 1921 they moved to Chicago and in 1922 they assumed their current identity, the Chicago Bears.
