NFL Draft: Sauce Gardner makes bold declaration before late-April’s showcase

April 4, 2022

Prospective NFL cornerback Sauce Gardner makes a bold declaration about his draft position ahead of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Aside from their position on the field, cornerbacks mirror wide receivers in mentality. The best NFL wide receivers illustrate the prowess of their offense, sprinting downfield and earning points in a brilliant display.

But aside from a lurking pick-six, the best cornerbacks can be harder to spot because the receiver they cover are eliminated from the game. Anyone familiar with ‘Revis Island’ knows that the best corners aren’t always noticed because they completely lock down the receivers they target. While Trevon Diggs got attention for his interceptions, J.C. Jackson was arguably the better cornerback in 2021.

It’s likely why New England didn’t want Jackson getting attention with a Pro Bowl nod back in 2020—and for good reason, because now Jackson got the contract he knows he deserved with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Perhaps that’s why wide receivers and cornerbacks tend to be the most outwardly confident players on the field, known to talk themselves up and talk down opponents like no other. While Larry Fitzgerald is an outlier in every sense of the word (he used to ask corners how their families were doing until Richard Sherman burned him during chit-chat), most wideouts and corners will say they’re the best in the game. Deion Sanders did it, Jalen Ramsey did it, and now Cincinnati Bearcats corner Sauce Gardner is doing it with a bold assertion: he’s the best player in the NFL Draft.

Sauce Gardner puts the NFL on notice with his unmatched ability at cornerback

It’s well-known that player’s actions are closely scrutinized as things ramp up for the NFL Draft, with the top prospects facing countless interviews and several physical exhibitions.

And as bold as calling yourself the best player in the draft might be, Gardner is drawing serious NFL predictions and comparisons that back up his claim.

Gardner is already getting compared to Antonio Cromartie, with the NFL suggesting that four Pro Bowl nominations could be in Gardner’s future as well. This bodes well for the fact that Gardner could follow closely in Cromartie’s footsteps, as the Jets reportedly have “heavy interest” in Gardner.

Gardner also told Twitter followers that he will be the ruling cornerback for whichever team chooses him, which is likely a manifestation that Gardner will endeavor to have it come to fruition.

After all, Gardner is modeling his play on some of the best corners in the game over the past decade, including Cromartie, Sherman and Jalen Ramsey.

While wide receivers and cornerbacks have the unfair reputation of being overly braggadocios, the best in the game can always back up whatever they say. And with Gardner already drawing comparisons with elite company, there’s no reason to believe that any of these tweets won’t manifest over the next few years.
